LAU NAU (aka Laura Naukkarinen)
Is one of the more interesting names in the Finnish contemporary music scene. A composer, music producer and performer whose music is imbued with a cinematic breadth of vision and idiosyncratic, finely honed sound world. Lau Nau works using both acoustic and electronic instruments, from traditional instruments and singing voice to analogue synthesisers and field recordings. While her songs are luminous, melancholic pieces of experimental chamber folk music, her scores for films and sound installations are experimental studies of sound.

THE MYSTIC REVELATION OF TEPPO REPO

Oslo Badstuforening, Sukkerbiten

Friday 12.8. 17:00
Free entrance to the concert

Limited capacity!

In the fifth round of Ääni Sauna, we have the pleasure of presenting a concert with a legendary Finnish singer-songwriter Joose Keskitalo (for the first time in Oslo!) together with the band Mystic Revelation of Teppo Repo.

JOOSE KESKITALO
As a bastion of underground folk music, he has established himself as one of the most recognized singer-songwriters of this century in Finland. Throughout his active years, Keskitalo has released 12 albums, the latest of which is called Happiness and was created in collaboration with Paavoharju. This autumn, two new albums will be released at the same time, the Orfiset laulut V & VI, which draw inspiration from Greek mythology.
Powerful songs, mystical visions and soulful lyrics. Joose Keskitalo's material is timeless and apt in the same way as the classics in literature.

THE MYSTIC REVELATION OF TEPPO REPO
The music of TMOTR is channeling the spirit of the Finnish forests and nature, combining shepherd music with hypnotic and subtle elements of spiritual jazz and nyabinghi rhythms. TMOTR has served as Keskitalo's band for several years. The long journey they have been on together has woven them together into a steady and catchy band with their own unique touch. Expect an extraordinary journey into the Finnish forests!

The ongoing photography series Eyes as Big as Plates started out in 2011 studying personifications of nature and folkloric explanations of natural phenomena. A decade later it has evolved into a continual search for modern human’s belonging in nature, taking the Norwegian-Finnish artist duo Karoline Hjorth and Riitta Ikonen to five continents on a quest to understand our relationship with our surroundings.

The second book in the series, Eyes as Big as Plates 2, features new portraits produced in collaboration with retired wrestling coaches, pub patrons, Sami reindeer herders, Aboriginal uncles, kantele players, librarians, wild boar hunters, and surfers across four continents. To mark the project's ten-year anniversary, it also includes contributions from several guest writers, along with an extended field notes section revealing the behind-the-scenes action of each portrait.

Riitta Ikonen & Karoline Hjorth have collaborated since 2011 on publications and projects including Eyes as Big as Plates (ongoing), The World in London (2012), Time is a ship that never casts anchor (2014–18), Signal, Lights, Connected for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics (2018), TEDMED Talk 2020, and Finnskogen Understories (ongoing). Finnish artist Riitta Ikonen received her MA from the Royal College of Art in 2008. Norwegian photographer, artist and writer Karoline Hjorth received her MA from the University of Westminster (London) in 2009.

3 hour live set
Oslo Badstuforening, Sukkerbiten
Saturday 12.2. 15:00 – 18:00
Free entrance to the concert, open for everyone.

For the third edition of Ääni Sauna, Tuomas Toivonen and Mikael Szafirowski have been invited to perform a combined three hour live set, separetely and as a duo for the first time. The experimental sounds they create are improvised and imagined for the space around Oslo Badstuforening at Sukkerbiten. The 'concert' will not have a specific stage and audience setting, rather a mobile and wireless installation setting the soundtrack for the whole area, the dock and for the people in motion passing by. The center of sound and attention will take place inside 'the dome' Oslo Fjord Hage, right next to the entrance of the saunas at Sukkerbiten. Saunas are running like normal and you are welcome to book a spot until it is full, dip in to the sea or just pass by this free event while it is taking place. There will be bonfires and tea for free.

ANTHOLOGY OF SPOKEN AND SUNG URBANISM

... As an architect who has also worked as an educator, journalist, writer and producer of music, I have blurred and tried to dissolve these disciplinary boundaries. In my 20’s I was part of a band called Giant Robot, and as its vocalist it felt natural to write songs that tried to articulate my interests and observations - work and life framed in their contemporary conditions, the city and its architecture. The city emerged as a central subject, setting and agent. I will revisit some of these texts I’ve written over the years, beginning with my early writing for Gianr Robot in the late 90’s, and my later solo material, combining them into a kind of anthology of urban songwriting. These texts also trace a development and change in my way of understanding the city, the society that builds and inhabits it and us as individuals. From the titillating excitement of the delirious metropolis to total urbanisation of the planet and our minds, still looking for other ways of listening and seeing …

MIKAEL SWAFIROWSKI
is a Finnish guitar player currently residing in Saint-louis, France. He is markedly working on expanding the vocabulary of amplified string instruments by way of extended playing techniques, as well as exploring new forms of structure and sound in music.
Having lived his formative years in the realm of jazz music, he is looking at other avenues of expression, such as noise, free improvised music, contemporary classical music, and a mix of popular and world music.

Musician and composer Jimi Tenor has never settled for the traditional role of a pop artist. Tenor has already built a reputation as a fascinating enigma in modern day music. Consistently one of the most inspired and unpredictable live artists around, his work since his breakthrough album ‘Intervision’ (Warp, 1997) had involved open-minded projects ranging from live film soundtracks and orchestral pieces to a series of Afro-based albums with his band Kabu Kabu and with the legendary Afro beat drummer Tony Allen.

For the second edition of Ääni Sauna, Jimi Tenor will perform an outdoors live set specially created for Oslo Badstuforening.
